He who learns nothing from his disciples is, in my opinion, worthless. Whenever I talk with someone I learn from him. I take from him more than I give him. In this way, a true teacher regards himself as a student of his students. If you will teach your pupils with this attitude, you will benefit much from them. --Mahatma Gandhi

Qantas Jet emergency landing today in Manila

amateur video: See what it was like during the emergency landing after a Qantas Airline flight lost cabin pressure and was forced to land in Manila International Airport where official discovered a big hole in the plane.

Flight QF 30, from London to Melbourne, had just made a stopover in Hong Kong. Passengers who talked to the media at the airport described hearing an explosion, and then oxygen masks were released.

"One hour into the flight there was a big bang, then the plane started going down," passenger Marina Scaffidi, 39, from Melbourne, told The Associated Press by phone from Manila airport. "There was wind swirling around the plane and some condensation."

She said the hole extended from the cargo hold into the passenger cabin.

"No one was very hysterical," she said.

June Kane of Melbourne described how parts of the plane's interior broke apart in the depressurized cabin.

"There was a terrific boom and bits of wood and debris just flew forward into first (class...

So you begin to recall the most recent one and dig the burrows of memory and found for yourself images that are hard to make out. It’s been a while since you’ve taken the ride and really, really found the joy of doing it.

In an attempt to hit something hard and to start building images around it, you try to shape and reshape the shadows and nameless faces in a half-empty slow-moving ride home and probably put backstories into each of them. But in the end, it’s the wind on your face that grabs notice.

It’s a moonlit night and you are clinging by the rear entrance with your foot slightly above the running board; the position affords you the view of the mountain’s silhouette ahead as the jeep ascends toward the town at the foot of Mt.
Foreign programmers: RP film scene exciting

MANILA, Philippines—Foreign festival programmers, who are in Manila for the 4th Cinemalaya Film Festival, told Inquirer Entertainment that Philippine cinema looks “exciting, energetic.”

Ansgar Vogt recounted that, while screening DVDs for the Berlin International Film Festival in 2005, he noticed there were three Filipino movies on his to-watch list: Auraeus Solito’s “Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros” and “Tuli” and Raya Martin’s “The Island at the End of the World.”

“As part of my job, I watch at least 1,000 films a year,” Vogt explained. “That these three films stood out could only mean that there must be something going on in the Philippines.”

His theory was “confirmed” when he set foot in Manila last year for Cinemanila, an international film festival. “I was amazed. The local scene was thrilling, energetic, different. [I found] a broad spectrum of films.”

Raymond Phathanavirangoon of the Toronto Film Fest agreed: “I was impressed by this year’s Cinemalaya entries. Ev...

Here now:: James Taylor - Fire and Rain (Beacon Theatre)

origin of the song lifted from wikipedia:

Taylor has related different versions of what the song is about. In a BBC interview he stated that the song chronicled his experiences in mental institutions and the suicide of a friend. More recently, on the VH1 series Story Tellers, Taylor said that the song was, indeed, about Suzanne Schnerr, a friend of his who died suddenly while he was away from home. According to that account, he had been in a deep depression after the failure of his new band "Flying Machine" to coalesce (the lyric includes a reference to "sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground"; the reference is to the name of the band rather than a fatal plane crash, as was long rumored). As he was wondering what to do with himself, he received word of Schnerr's death, and the song explains that her death was a check for his own worries, a way of realizing the transience of life and his need to get back to his old friends. In other interviews Taylor has also indica...

After my resignation from my previous job (strictly barong-or-long-sleeve-and-tie dress code) I handed my colleagues all my neckties but two--metallic deep blue and maroon--just in case an event calls for one. Sure enough, I used one during a coat and tie affair at a local hotel. Saves me the headache of looking for the perfect ti...

Stanford U :: Education faculty to make articles available to all

In a move designed to broaden access to faculty research and scholarship, the School of Education at Stanford recently adopted a policy requiring its faculty members to make their scholarly articles available for free to the public.

The school's faculty unanimously approved the new "open access" policy in June, becoming the first education school in the nation to enact a mandatory policy.

An estimated 30 universities around the world have adopted similar plans.

FASTfacts: Loboc

"Get that engagement ring and pop that question on a moonlit night! And if the answer is "NO!" then by all means, leave her in the middle of the raft and let her find her way back."

Stories abound (of epic proportion; or not really) about Loboc town. Here's a little dose

No 1: Music Capital
Loboc is not tagged as "the music capital of Bohol or perhaps of the South"for nothing. Story has it that you can always find a musical instrument in each house and each Lobocanon can sing (and by golly, can sing it well baby) as well as play at least one music instrument. Loboc is the home of Bohol's Pastores (pastores is a full-production performance of daygon or caroling at Christmastime)

No 2: World Class All
The Loboc Children's Choir, bagging national and international choir championships, now has a concert hall of their own. It's near the floating resto terminal. This is courtesy of a Filipino company taking that big PIE SHARE in snack food category in China ...

Interview with Nobel Laureate in Literature Doris Lessing

No relations with Gary Lesing :D

Seriously now.

Interview with the 2007 Nobel Laureate in Literature Doris Lessing at her home in London, 14 April 2007. The interviewer is Professor John Mullan. Doris Lessing talks about the inspiration for her first book, 'The Grass is Singing', the autobiographical nature of her 'Children of Violence' sequence of novels (10:29), 'The Golden Notebook' (12:23) and how it became a cult book (21:30), and why she took a foray into science fiction writing with her 'Canopus in Argos' series of novels (22:50). She also talks about the two novels she published under the pseudonym Jane Somers (26:45), why her autobiographies go no further than 1962 (36:55), and being an earth mother in the 1960s (37:20). Finally, she discusses her latest novel, 'Alfred and Emily', which explores the life of her parents and the horrors of war (44:30).
